Helpful Tips
About Clothing, Color, Tone, and Style ...
The goal of any fine portrait is to direct the viewer's attention to the face or faces in the portrait. Your clothing, accessories and hairstyle should facilitate this goal.
Colors & Patterns
Darker shades are more flattering and slimming.
Medium to dark tones of Brown Rust, Burgundy, Green, or Blue work well when photographed against a dark background.
Bright colors, such as red and orange, will completely overpower the face.
Avoid light colors that approximate flesh tones such as beige, tan, peach, pink, white, and yellow, because light-colored clothing is distracting.
Stripes, plaids and checkered patterns do not photograph well.
Style & Accessories
Very simple garments always photograph best. Turtle necks or V-necks are flattering provided that neither is exaggerated in style. Avoid very wide or particularly deep V-neck garments as well as bulky cowl neck sweaters that completely hide the neck. Long sleeves are essential for teens and adults, as bare arms call attention to themselves and will overpower the face. Clothing should be fitted properly. It should not be tight or baggy, since these styles do not photograph well. Wrinkles will show - so be certain clothing is pressed appropriately.
Women
Should avoid large jewelry, since it has a tendency to be overpowering.
Women being photographed in full length should wear long skirts, pants, or dark stockings in order to keep the eye from being directed toward the legs and away from the face. If feet are to show in the portrait, make certain shoes and stockings are in keeping with the visual intent of the portrait.
Men
Ties and handkerchiefs should complement the suit, not draw attention away from the face. Remember to coordinate belts, shoes, suspenders and socks with each other as well as the rest of your ensemble. Checking the lengths on shirt, jacket and pant cuffs is highly recommended.
Hairstyles & Grooming
Men should have their hair cut about one week before the portrait session.
Women should have their hair trimmed no less than two weeks prior to the photography session.
Avoid styles that will date the photograph. Trying new hair cuts, colors and styles immediately before the photography session is not recommended. Both men and women should have nicely manicured nails. Ladies polish should be in light to medium shades, since bright or dark colors draw excessive attention to the hands.
Makeup
Simple and natural is the way to go. Lipsticks in medium shades work best.
Use lip gloss sparingly, since it has a tendency to reflect camera lights. Waterproof mascara works best for weddings and anniversaries. Bring lipstick and powder to photography sessions for last minute touch-ups.
Families & Groups
In a family or group, proper clothing coordination is critical. Choose clothing in the same tonal ranges so that no single member of the family stands out because the clothing is too light or bright as compared to the rest of the group. Clothing in medium shades complement portraits made in outdoor environments. Avoid bright colors, stripes, multi-colored and floral patterns, and bright reds.
